Expert guidance helps families decode scores and build a winning strategy.
The PSAT: More Than “Practice”
It’s a Friday morning. You and your student open the PSAT results. There’s a score, and then a series of shaded bars under each section.
What does it all mean—and how can this actually help your child?
The PSAT is more than a practice SAT. Starting in 8th grade, students take versions that track progress toward college readiness and highlight strengths and gaps. This gives families a roadmap for improvement long before high-stakes testing begins.
The Different PSAT Levels
PSAT 8/9 (240–1440)For middle school/early high schoolers. Covers early algebra, geometry, and foundational reading/grammar.PSAT 10 (320–1520)Taken in 10th grade. Introduces more advanced math/reading, setting up higher-level testing.PSAT/NMSQT (320–1520)Taken in 11th grade. The only PSAT that counts for National Merit Scholarships.SAT (200–1600)Required by many colleges. Includes Pre-Calculus, advanced reading, and analysis skills.
Why the PSAT/NMSQT Matters
The PSAT/NMSQT is the gateway to scholarships.
Each year, 1.5M juniors take the test, but only the top 1% in each state qualify as National Merit Semifinalists.
Here’s how it works:
-
Selection Index Score = calculated from PSAT results, ranging 48–228.
-
Commended Students: Top 50,000 nationwide (~210 index). Recognized, plus eligible for Special Scholarships.
-
Semifinalists: Top 1% in each state. Cutoffs vary—NJ (223) vs. SD (208) in a recent year.
-
Finalists & Scholars: Students meeting their state cutoff can apply to advance to Finalist status. About half eventually earn scholarships, often directly from colleges.
Colleges often award automatic merit scholarships to Semifinalists and Finalists—sometimes worth thousands of dollars.
How to Use PSAT Scores Strategically
Those shaded bars on your student’s report? They’re not filler. They’re a built-in study guide.
-
For younger students (8th–10th grade): Lower scores = areas to strengthen before junior year PSAT/NMSQT.
-
For juniors: Understanding the report now = set priorities before the SAT (and scholarships) arrive.
Think of a PSAT score not as a grade, but as an early warning system—an opportunity to build momentum.
